How RotRace uses Screen Time
RotRace helps adults reduce distracting screen time through opt-in challenges. We integrate with Apple’s Screen Time API via the Family Controls entitlement.
What we do
Adults create or join time-boxed challenges, choose which apps or categories to cut back on, and track progress. Challenges can be free or include optional entry-fee contests similar to DietBet-style “contests,” not gambling.
Why we need Family Controls
- Show Apple’s system UI so the device owner can choose which apps/categories to limit.
- Apply OS-level blocking to those selections while the challenge is active.
- Read Screen Time usage for only the selected apps/categories to compute stats, leaderboards, and optional contest results.
Only the system Screen Time API provides tamper-resistant limits and trusted usage data for fair challenges.
User control
- Explicit opt-in via the system dialog; adults 18+ only.
- Per-app/category selection in Apple’s picker—no full app inventory is required.
- Revoke or leave anytime; all apps become available immediately and collection stops.
- Sharing with friends is optional: keep data private, share aggregated challenge stats, or share per-app usage for the selections you chose.
Data use and retention
- Screen Time data is used only for limits, stats, leaderboards, and optional contest payouts.
- No ads, cross-app tracking, or resale—ever.
- Retained only as long as needed to display results and handle short post-challenge reviews or disputes, then deleted.
